The Laurel Nursery and Day Care Centre implements a dynamic curriculum designed to support children’s growth, development and learning. The teachers are all highly trained in early childhood development and the most effective early childhood teaching methods. The curriculum is dedicated to providing individualized care and teaching to help each child reach his or her full potential and ensure a smooth transition from stage to stage.
Teachers carefully and regularly observe each child in the learning environment to identify his or her unique interests, strengths and needs. They plan individualized care and appropriate instruction for each child to help develop the skills and knowledge for short and long term success. Children are immersed in a loving, responsive, and respectful environment surrounded by teachers and administration that are eager to greet and work with them each day. Teachers work closely with families as partners to support each child’s development.
During the early years children start to develop their approach to learning, which serves how they approach new situations and how they learn throughout their life. The teachers at Laurel Nursery intentionally foster the skills of creativity, curiosity, confidence, persistence, and how to solve problems through a variety of experiences throughout the week. The teachers skilfully cover all the major learning areas, including social and emotional development, communication, language & literacy, math and problem solving skills, creative arts, science knowledge and skills, motor skills and physical development.
The curriculum fosters children’s social and emotional development by helping children learn how to understand their own feelings and the feelings of others. Children will develop skills of empathy, cooperation, a strong self identity, how to regulate and express their emotions appropriately, interact with others, build relationships with their peers and work independently and as part of a group.
The curriculum offers a language and print rich environment that specifically develops children’s speaking, listening, and early reading and writing skills. At Laurel Nursery, children are immersed in an environment where they learn a wide variety of words and phrases and gain phonological awareness and alphabetic knowledge so they can identify letter names and sounds, They learn print and book concepts and practice emerging writing skills, all of which set the foundation for strong reading and writing skills. Children are actively encouraged to communicate their thoughts, ideas, wants and feelings and learn the rules of polite, appropriate and effective conversation. Children will learn to talk confidently and clearly, enjoying stories, songs and poems. They will begin to recognize letters, write their name and some familiar words, and use a pencil appropriately. The teachers work to communicate with each child in his or her home language and also support the development of strong English language skills.
The Laurel Nursery teachers actively foster knowledge of mathematics through creating opportunities for children to learn the essential skills of problem solving, reasoning, communicating, and making connections. Children will learn to recognize and use number words and symbols, how to count, name and describe shapes, create and describe patterns, and analyze data. They will further develop an understanding of math through stories, songs, games and imaginative play.
Laurel Nursery prides itself in fostering a love of the creative arts through many different means. Children express themselves creatively through the visual arts, music, dance and rhythm and drama. As children draw, paint, sing, construct, dramatize, weave and move, they make new discoveries about themselves and others.
Children are actively exposed to science content through hands on activities that focus on living things, physical properties of materials and objects, and the earth’s environment. The teachers help children learn the foundational science skills of observing, experimenting, predicting, and communicating their ideas to others. Children explore and find out about the world around them, asking questions about it, building with different materials, and learning about everyday technology. They will learn about plants and animals and other science topics that stimulate their interest, such as the solar system and Dinosaurs.
Young children go through enormous physical changes in their early years. At Laurel Nursery the teachers actively encourage physical development through activities that help the children to learn to move and control their bodies with confidence. Children have time outdoors daily where they can climb, jump, run, play with sand and water, swing, and play on riding toys. Teachers also help children develop the fine motor skills needed for writing through many opportunities to draw, write, paint, cut with scissors, and develop the other skills needed for writing.
